Uznews.net – Uzbek human rights activists have made an appeal for help for Janna Ignatenko, the mother of passerby Georgiy Aleksandrov who was killed outside the Israeli embassy in Tashkent on 13 May 2005. Pensioner Janna Ignatenko’s only son Georgiy, 53, was walking to a notary that day to register the purchase of a flat and carried a big sum of money with him, so he must have had a stressed look and attracted attention from police officers who decided he was suspicious and reported to the embassy guards.
The guards immediately opened fire on him without warning and literally peppered him with bullets, although he was walking on the other side of the street. At the same time, several dozen thousand dollars that was on him disappeared without traces.
As a result, as has been repeatedly reported in the media, the investigation into the death of Aleksandrov has never been completed, while his elderly mother ended up in a grave situation – without a house and a breadwinner. For almost three years she has been trying to bring the killers of her son to justice but the Israeli government is exonerating them.
Human rights activists have once even met the Israeli ambassador to Uzbekistan to discuss this problem but the ambassador called the killed man “a potential terrorist who deserves a shot without trial and investigation”.
All inquiries sent by Janna Ignatenko to the prosecutor’s office received the same answer that the killer had not been found and that the investigation was still under way. However, prosecutors said privately that the killer was in Israel and that there could not be even talk of his extradition, human rights activists said.
This is the reason that Janna Ignatenko has been taking part in rallies staged by human rights activists every Thursday outside the Uzbek prosecutor-General’s Office, demanding justice and the return of money that was stolen from her son. She has already been detained twice and beaten up three times by police officers and hired provocateurs during rallies.
Ignatenko has her hand broken now, she is losing her sight and she is very exhausted both physically and morally.
Human rights activists made an appeal to raise money for Janna Ignatenko and opened a bank account: SD-77 MFO 00427, account 20206840700000427001 Chilanzar branch of UzPSB. Contact person is Yelena Urlayeva. Tel/fax: (+998 371) 264-15-84, mobile: (+998 97) 392-17-84, e-mail: e_urlaeva@yahoo.com
